TPO membrane

TPO membrane (thermoplastic polyolefin), which is typically white, is becoming the first choice in roofing solutions for re-roofing and waterproofing of residential and commercial buildings.
Ideal for flat or low slope roofs of all sizes, the polyester reinforcement allows it to be mechanically attached (screwed) to the roof deck. This installation method is the most common because it allows significant saving on glue, making it more economical and environmentally friendly.

Reflects sun rays

  • When selected in a light color (white being the general standard), TPO membrane will be described as energy-efficient as it will reflect the sun rays which would otherwise heat a darker roof. This quality will be potentially useful to reduce energy consumption related to cooling the building but also to counteract urban heat islands, in addition to avoiding summer overheating which accelerates roof aging.
  • Its Solar Reflectance Index (IRS) is among the best on the market, exceeding EPA Energy Star program requirements and the new by-laws of some Montreal boroughs.

  • TPO membrane has a superior resistance to aging caused by ultraviolet (UV) exposure, ozone and pollution.
  • TPO membrane is reinforced with a polyester scrim, providing exceptional resistance to punctures, tears and attacks by small rodents.
  • Hot air welded joints form a ultra-resistant homogenous bond.
  • No flame is necessary for the TPO membrane installation.
  • Various installation techniques and thicknesses of TPO are available, depending on the environmental conditions and use of your building. Consult our experts; they will guide you toward the best option.

  • We prefer installing under our membranes a half-inch thick high density polyisocyanurate panel. This very rigid panel brings imputrescible support, perfect to absorb hail impacts and circulation.
  • TPO membrane is supplied in 5 to 12 feet wide by 100 feet long rolls. Fasteners are screwed at regular intervals under all the roll joints, including the perimeters of the roof and each mechanical element or detail of the roof.
  • The seams are welded using a hot air welding robot, with the exception of a few details which require a manual welder. All seams are verified after each day of work.
  • At Couvertures Montérégiennes, roof unit boxes (ventilation, air output or other) are always made and water-tested at the workshop to make sure they are delivered on site perfectly watertight.

  • TPO membrane is the best alternative for sustainability, long-term value and guarantee. A guarantee form 10 to 35 years is available width TPO membrane which covers the labor and materials

  • Cleaning the drain of a basin-type roof is common to all types of roofing.
  • Not allowing objects to whirl on the roof is a good way to avoid asand blasting effect.
  • By precaution, it is recommended to inspect the roof regularly, especially during the fall or after extreme weather events.

Did you know ?

In 2011, Montreal’s Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie borough adopted a by-law imposing reflective roofs for any new construction or renovation. This by-law has been adopted every year since by additional boroughs.
In 2015, the following boroughs had adopted a reflective roof by-law: Rosemont, Hochelaga-Mercier-Maisonneuve, Villeray-St-Michel-Parc Extension, Sud-Ouest, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Côte-Des-Neiges, Ville-Marie, Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Outremont, Plateau-Mont-Royal, Anjou and St-Laurent.
Note that Rosemont and Outremont boroughs have also banned the asphalt and gravel system in 2015 and that Plateau Mont-Royal by-law concerns only new buildings and extensions.
TPO roofing membrane ha been installed on roofs since the 80’s and the oldest in Quebec is about 25 years old and still in excellent condition.
